Great Escape: Indulge in Locally Grown Produce and Handmade Goods

Area farmers markets provide healthy escape from your average supermarket.

Come May 1, Sunday mornings in downtown Birmingham will become a bit more interesting with the opening of the . Open every Sunday morning from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. from May 1 through October 23, the Birmingham Farmers Market boasts more than 50 vendors featuring locally and regionally grown produce, plants and flowers, fresh prepared foods and hand-crafted goods.

Live music provides ambiance while you browse and the Kids Zone provides arts and crafts for the little ones. The Birmingham Farmers Market will be held in parking lot 6 on the east side of North Old Woodward Avenue.

New Farmers Market helps Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospital patients

Henry Ford West Bloomfield Hospita's farmers market is open rain or shine every week thanks to its location in the lobby of the hospital. From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. each Wednesday, visitors can opt to eat healthy by patronizing market vendors selling Michigan grown fruits and veggies and other products.

Farmington farmers market’s 2011 season kicks off May 7

Every Saturday from May 7 through mid-November, downtown Farmington comes alive at the Farmers & Artisans Market. The Walter E. Sundquist Pavilion at Grand River and Grove Street plays host to this weekly gathering of vendors showcasing fresh Michigan produce, baked goods, fine art, photography and other artisan-made products.
