Birmingham's Food Will Go From 'Farm to Table' at New Event This Fall

Eating farm fresh will take on a new meaning this September, with a newly-approved Farm to Table Block Party scheduled for Sept. 7.

The event is sponsored by The Community House and was approved by the Birmingham City Commission Monday night.

The Farm to Table Block Party will bring together Michigan farmers and vendors as well as a variety of Birmingham resturants for an evening of tastings, food and a look at how Michigan-grown food makes its way straight to our plates.

According to The Community House's Kathie Ninneman, the event will be partnership with the Birmingham Principal Shopping District, the Baldwin Public Library and farmers from the Birmingham Farmers Market.

The event will shut down part of Merrill and Bates street from 4-8 p.m. Sept. 7 and will include a wine-tasting on The Community House terrace.

"We want to encourage families to come out," said Ninneman.

City Commissioners were in favor of the plan Monday night, with Commissioner Rackeline Hoff noting that the event naturally complemented the Birmingham Farmers Market, which typically sets up shop every Sunday in the summer and fall through the end of October.

"I think this is exactly what the Farmers Market tries to do," Hoff said.
