Science Among 5 Big Things Going On at Detroit Country Day's Lower School

Get a glimpse inside the Detroit Country Day Lower School.

The Detroit Country Day Lower School focuses on many things for a well-rounded education. Science is chief among them, and will be highlighted this weekend at the school's annual Super Science Saturday event on Oct. 19.

In what has become a tradition started 20 years ago by DCDS Dean and Science teacher Marleen Maicki, student volunteers from the Country Day's Upper School in Beverly Hills will teach fun and interactive science lessons to students in grades 1-5 at the Junior and Lower School. More information is available at the school's website.

Here are five specific things new Principal Jennifer Bullock recently told Birmingham Patch about the school:

The Hamlet

A unique learning village where student pre-K and junior kindergarten learn everyday.

Camps

Which run the gamut from academics to ballet, dinosaurs to spies every summer. "Our camps are run by Country Day teachers, and they come up with their own wonderful ideas every summer," Bullock said.

Arts

Arts are incorporating into the curriculum. For examples, students in preschool through second grade learn how to play keyboard as part or regular instruction.

Science

Super Science Saturday, a 20-year tradition, is just one example of the emphasis on the sciences.

Character

The faculty and staff are committed to providing unique and special educational experiences that encourages leadership and character skills.
