The entire community is invited to enjoy Children Of The World, a free International Dance and Music Concert to be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013, from 1pm to 5pm.  This exciting afternoon gathering will be held in the recently renovated Shain Park in beautiful downtown Birmingham, MI.

Children Of The World will showcase costumed groups performing traditional music and dance representing countries from around the globe. Irish dancers, Middle-Eastern belly dancers, Flamenco dancers and a Caribbean steel drum band are just a sampling of the professional entertainment line-up. Many groups will feature children and young adults from dance schools in the Metro-Detroit area.  Audience participation with group dancing and sing-a-longs will be encouraged. The public is invited to wear their favorite ethnic clothing/items. An ethnic costume parade with 'prizes' for children  will start at 2:30 pm. The public is welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic foods for a relaxing, fun-filled afternoon. Free bottles of water will be available.

“We hope to see lots of children of all ages at the concert enjoying music and dance from around the world.” says Brian Blaesing, Moderator of the church. “We are a progressive, welcoming church that reaches out to the community through free cultural events. We continue to host B'Jazz Vespers on the third Sunday of each month and our Global Gift Shop sells unique, free-trade items from artists in developing nations. Now we are hosting Children of The World, an event we hope will bring the community together to enjoy and learn about international music and dance.”

Children Of The World is sponsored by First Baptist Church Birmingham in partnership with  Gateway Montessori School which is located in the church at 300 Willits in downtown Birmingham. One purpose of this event is to perform songs and dances which reflect the cultural heritage of many of the children who attend the school. Funding for the event is made available through a generous gift from the family of long-time church member, Janet Fouracre.

First Baptist Church, an American Baptist church, has been located in Birmingham since 1870. The Gothic limestone building was completed in 1929. The Gateway Montessori School has run its programs out of the church facility for well over a decade.
