The local education and literacy non-profit organization called Operation: Kid Equip is working in partnership with the OU English Department to host the Big Brain’s Bookfair at Barnes & Noble to raise awareness and money for children in need. This is event is free and open to the public. The Poetry Slam Competition will coincide with the bookfair.

A poetry slam competition is a popular and competitive art form where poets, or slammers, perform their original poetry. The poetry slam is designed to evoke an emotional or vocal response from the audience. In order to do this, slammers go beyond simply reading their poetry to create a high-energy and engaging performance. Styles have included lyrical verse, hip-hop, and sound-driven poetry. Winners of a poetry slam competition have dramatic delivery, emotional appeal, and engaging content. While winning requires some skill, it’s all about how the slammer can entertain and inspire the audience and judges.

Prizes

First Place: $100 cash prize

Second Place: $50 gift card

Third Place: $25 gift card

Rules

The poetry slam will consist of two rounds. Each slammer must prepare two original poems.

· Slammers must present their own original poems on the date and time of the competition.

· No props, costumes, or instruments may be used during the performance

· Slammers are allowed three minutes for each poem.

Slammers must arrive for the poetry slam competition at the Barnes & Noble location in Troy (across from Oakland Mall) no later than 12:45pm on Sunday, October 13.

Judging

A panel of judges will score each slammers performance based on the following criteria:

1.      Content

2.      Delivery

3.      Passion

These criteria will be scored on a scale from 1 to 10 for each poem. The slammer with the highest score will win the poetry slam.
