Caldecott, Newbery and beyond! The American Library Association recently named the best children’s books of 2012. Connie Ilmer of the Baldwin Public Library will share the 2013 winners of the Caldecott, the Newbery, the Coretta Scott King, the Geisel award and many more award-winning books and authors. Connie will also bring some other great books that may not have won an award but are some of the best published last year. Connie will provide a list for all attendees. The meeting will be at The Community House in Birmingham on Thursday, February 21 from 9:30 – 11:30. Guests welcome.

The Community House has been a hub for Birmingham residents since 1923. Founded as a location for dances, meetings, concerts and plays, the Community House is a place for all that and more. A nonprofit organization, the Community House strives to provide residents programs, services and educational opportunities to enrich their lives.

The Community House offers classes in fitness and yoga, food and wine, gardening, art and theater. Youth classes and programs are also available. Residents can also use the Community House to book travel arrangements and packages.

The Early Childhood Center at the Community House offers child care and preschool services for children 6 months to 5 years old.  The center emphasizes learning through play with the High Scope curriculum. Meals are provided, as are access to Community House programs.

Community members can also take advantage of the Community House Dance Academy, with classes in ballet, pointe, modern, creative dance, jazz, contemporary, tap and ballet workout. Founded in 1964, the Dance Academy is led by a renowned faculty of instructors and choreographers.

The Community House is also a popular location for banquets, corporate events and weddings.  Rooms can accommodate 10 to 350 people, include all audio and visual set-up, and feature large windows and a fireplace. The Community House also offers catering options, from continental breakfasts to multicourse meals for special events. Groups can also book the Van Dusen Terrace.
