Harvest Festival at the Birmingham's Farmers Market
The Birmingham Farmers Market will celebrate Michigan’s abundant harvest and our rich agricultural heritage at the Harvest Festival on Sunday, September 16 from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event will offer hands-on activities for all ages and teach attendees about the evolution of farming.
There will be plenty of animals to see and pet at the event, including one local farmer’s pet steer named Martin. View a live sheep shearing demonstration from one of the top ten sheep shearers in the nation, Sy Caryl, at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
Shoppers can also expect to see rabbits, baby animals, a milking goat, pony and sheep from Bowers School Traveling Farm. Attendees will enjoy live entertainment, antique farm tools and machinery, and an old-fashioned corn sheller. Children can visit the Kids Zone for a free straw hat craft.
“We hold this festival in September because it celebrates everything we’ve worked toward the entire year: incredible bounty,” said Market Master Richard “Cousin Don” Hobson. “You won’t find a more diverse selection of the area’s freshest, locally-grown produce than right here in Birmingham at our Harvest Festival.”
The Birmingham Farmers Market runs every Sunday through October 28, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. The lively outdoor market is located in public Parking Lot 6 on the east side of N. Old Woodward (across from Salvatore Scallopini Restaurant and Booth Park). Every week the market offers fresh prepared foods, live music, a children’s craft area and more. Throughout the summer more than 70 booths will feature a diverse array of locally and regionally grown produce including organic vegetables, fruits, flowers and garden plants, plus baked goods, and some hand crafted items.
