More About Greenwood Cemetery
As one of the oldest cemeteries in the area, Greenwood Cemetery is the final resting place for Birmingham's founders and some of its most well-known citizens. The oldest section of the cemetery was purchased from the federal governement in 1821, and since then has expanded three times until the city took over in 1946.
The cemetery's notable residents include Birmingham's only Revolutionary War veteran, John Daniels; Martha Baldwin, after whom the library is named; and U.S. Congressman Roland Trowbridge. Also interned is Birmingham's first landowner, the first mayor of Birmingham and the first murder victims in Bloomfield Township.
Information is provided online, or at the cemetery, for self-guided walking tours.
