Here's what's coming up this week in high school playoff action: It's time to shine for the girls of the Detroit Country Day girls basketball team. This week is the last for the girls tournament, with quarterfinal play beginning Tuesday. Semifinals and finals will be held at the Breslin Center this weekend in Lansing. Brother Rice, Detroit Country Day and Roeper Upper School advanced Friday to the state regional basketball tournament with wins in their district final games. In Class A, Brother Rice faced a tough challenge in Southfield-Lathrup. Lathrup has a terrific sophomore guard in Jonathan Williams and has already eliminated two Birmingham teams this week, beating Groves and Seaholm on its way to the district final Friday night. Playing as the undefeated home team Wednesday night, Detroit Country Day's spot in the boys basketball district finals was hardly in doubt. The Yellowjackets beat Madison Heights Lamphere 77-13 Wednesday in the district semifinals. They outscored Lamphere in the first half 51-7 and only a running clock in the second half helped put the Rams out of their misery. Country Day will have to beat Cranbrook-Kingswood on Friday to advance to regionals. Groves boys varsity basketball coach Scott Sheckell told Justin Meredith he needed to take over the game if the Falcons were going to advance in the team’s district opener against Southfield-Lathrup Monday night at Groves. The senior guard did his best. Meredith scored 17 points in the second half, including four three-pointers, to try and extend Groves season one more game, but it wasn’t enough for the Falcons who lost 71-51 to Lathrup Monday night. “I thought Justin was terrific tonight,” Sheckell said. “I told him at halftime he had to score, it was on him and he came out and was great.” …

If the Brother Rice High School varsity hockey team keeps playing like this, the Division 2 state title will be coming to Birmingham. The Warriors beat Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) conference rival Warren-De La Salle 4-1 Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals. The De La Salle Pilots may have been the top-ranked team in Michigan going into the regional final, but they faced a team that’s playing some of the best hockey in the state. Cranbrook-Kingswood’s easy run through the girls varsity basketball districts came to an abrupt halt on Friday night when it faced Detroit Country Day and lost 63-29. Birmingham Marian and Detroit Country Day girls varsity basketball teams both picked up huge wins in the opening round of the district tournament. The Mustangs beat Seaholm 63-26 while the Yellowjackets beat Madison Heights-Lamphere 66-18. Both wins were expected — Seaholm and Lamphere combined for only five wins this season.
