What's Open, Closed on Martin Luther King Day
Many city offices remain open while state and federal offices are closed for the day.
Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, meaning that schools and many workplaces are closed for the day.
Luckily, many city offices are still open, including:
- City Hall
- Birmingham Police Department
- Birmingham Fire Department
- Baldwin Public Library
- The Community House
All state and federal offices, however, will be closed on Monday, including the U.S. Post Office on Bowers Street.
Most local banks are also closed for the holiday, including the Birmingham Bloomfield Credit Union, First Place Bank, Bank of America, Paramount Bank, Bank of Birmingham, mBank, Flagstar Bank, Chase Bank and Comerica Bank.
All schools in Birmingham and the surrounding areas will be closed Monday, including:
- Birmingham Public Schools
- Eton Academy
- Roeper Upper and Middle School
- Our Shepherd Lutheran School
- Holy Name School
If you know of other businesses or facilities that will be closed to observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, email Editor Laura Houser at Laura.Houser@patch.com and we'll add it to our list!

Birmingham schools are closed, but all staff are required to report to work. Students get a day off, but teachers, secretaries, counselors, principals, and other administrators (many of them African-American) do not.
