What's Open and Closed in Birmingham This Christmas

Grocery stores are closed but you can still see a movie this Christmas in Birmingham.

It's happened to all of us: It's Christmas Eve but you've forgotten to buy milk. Or, you find that parking ticket you thought you lost. Or, maybe you just want to avoid the family and see a movie.

Never fear! We've got your guide to what's open and when in Birmingham:

City offices

Birmingham City Hall, including the Clerk's Office, City Manager's Office and Finance Department, will be closed Monday and Tuesday. In addition, Tuesday's Traffic & Safety Board meeting has been cancelled. Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Post Office on Bowers Street will be closed on Tuesday, nor will there be any mail delivery or pickup. The post office will reopen with normal business hours, 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Have an emergency? Don't hesitate to call 911 for police or fire emergencies. For any non-emergency, call the Police Department at 248-530-1889 or the Fire Department at 248-530-1900.

Since the holiday falls on a week day this year, however, trash pick-up will be one-day late this week.

Grocery stores

Worried what would happen if you burn the ham or forget the milk? Birmingham's three major grocery stores — Kroger, Papa Joe's Gourmet Market and Market Square — will be open on Christmas Eve. Kroger and Papa Joe's will be open until 5 p.m. while Market Square will be open until 7 p.m.

All three stores, however, will be closed on Christmas.

Around town

  • Baldwin Public Library will be closed Monday and Tuesday, reopening at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.
  • The Birmingham Ice Sports Arena has open skating from 10:30 a.m.-noon on Christmas Eve but is closed on Christmas. The regular skating schedule, beginning with Parent & Tot Skate at 9:30 a.m., begins again on Wednesday.
  • The Birmingham Family YMCA will be open until noon on Christmas Eve then closed on Christmas.
  • The Palladium 12 Theatre will begin showing movies at 11 a.m. on Christmas Eve and noon on Christmas Day. The Birmingham 8 will also begin showing movies at noon on Christmas Day.
