Weekend Planner: Symphony Orchestra, 'Nutcracker'

Also headlining this weekend is the BBAC Holiday Shop and the last weekend for the Magic of Birmingham.

 

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. Birmingham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time.

  1. Birmingham Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra performs 'Make a Joyful Noise'
    When:
    7 p.m. Sunday
    Where: Groves High School
    Why Go: Join the Birmingham-Bloomfield Symphony Orchestra for one of audiences' favorite concerts of the year. Enjoy Greensleeves and March of the Toys, selections from Hook, The Skaters Waltz, Parade of the Wooden Soldiers and The Toy Trumpet. Plus for the first time ever, choirs from Groves High School and Seaholm High School will perform with the symphony. Tickets are $22; everyone 18 and under is free.
  2. Shop the holiday shop at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center
    When:
    10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday
    Where: Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center
    Why Go: Shop the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center's 31st annual Holiday Shop, which offers unique handcrafted items from more than 100 local artists. Wares include jewelry, home decor, clothing, pottery, woodwork, ceramics, holiday merchandise and more. These one-of-a-kind creations start at $5 and prices go up through the hundreds.
  3. 'Caroling, Caroling: An Alfred Burt Family Christmas'
    When:
    4 p.m. Sunday
    Where: St. James Episcopal Church
    Why Go: On Sunday, the combined choirs of St. James Episcopal Church and All Saints' Episcopal Church in Pontiac join forces to pay homage to the late Alfred Burt, who wrote fifteen Christmas Carols between 1942-54.
  4. The Nutcracker
    When:
    6 p.m. Saturday; 3 p.m. Sunday
    Where: Seaholm High School
    Why Go: The Zone Dance Center, based out of Southfield, presents the perennial holiday favorite, The Nutcracker ballet, at Seaholm High School this weekend. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. 
  5. Magic of Birmingham
    When:
    11 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday
    Where: The shops of downtown Birmingham
    Why Go: Finish your Christmas shopping during the last weekend of the Magic of Birmingham, this Saturday downtown. Enjoy deals from participating merchants, plus one lucky shopper will win two airline tickets to anywhere in the continental U.S. from Departure Travel.
