Weekend Planner: 'Just Because' Book Release Party and More

Also headlining this weekend in Birmingham is a concert by the Axiom Brass Quintet and a Mom 2 Mom sale at Groves High School.

 

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do this weekend. Birmingham Patch is coming to the rescue. We’ve got the best bets for your done-work-outta-here time.

  1. Lido Gallery Poetry and Music Series: A Host of Hosts
    When: 7-9 p.m. Friday
    Where: Lido Gallery
    Why Go: Six area poets and musicians will visit the Lido Gallery Friday for a special Hosts of Hosts event, made of music performances and poetry readings. On the line-up is: poet Ann Holdreith, author Writer L. Bush, poet Laura Bodary, percussionist and poet John "Juan Zo" Smolinski, musician Joe Kidd and author Mary Minock.
  2. Groves High School Mom 2 Mom sale
    When: 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday
    Where: Groves High School
    Why Go: The Groves High School Mom 2 Mom sale, taking place this Saturday, will benefit the Groves Fashion Club and the Charity Fashion Show put on annually by Groves fashion students. For more information, contact Kristen Erickson at Ke03bps@birmingham.k12.mi.us.
  3. Axiom Brass Quintet concert
    When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
    Where: First United Methodist Church of Birmingham
    Why Go: The award-winning educational band, Axiom Brass Quintet, will visit the First United Methodist Church this week for a special concert Friday. Praised for their “high level of musicality and technical ability," Axiom is the winner of the 2008 International Chamber Brass Competition.
  4. How to start your own Kiva Club
    When:     1-2 p.m. Saturday
    Where: The Student Connection
    Why Go: Has your teen ever wanted to learn more about the world of microlending as a way to make a difference? Raj Vutukuru, a senior at Athens High School, will give a presentation for any Michigan high school student who wants to learn about the Kiva program, which lets volunteers donate as little as $25 to help finance small businesses in developing countries.
  5. Just Because book party
    When:     9:30-11 a.m. Sunday
    Where: Goldfish Swim School
    Why Go: Amber Housey, author of the new children's book Just Because invites readers all ages to join her in celebrating the book's launch at Goldfish Swim School. There won't be swimming but there will be temporary tattoos, face painting, refreshments, a book reading and signing and Tom Plunkard the magician will be bringing some special surprises.
