Weekend Planner: Nite Notes Concert Honors Life of Local Philanthropist

Also headlining this weekend are two book signings, an open house at Roeper and a performance of the Birmingham Concert Band.

  1. Book signing with Phil Berg
    When:
    9-11 a.m. Saturday
    Where: Auto Zone Hobbies
    Why go: Phil Berg, author of Ultimate Garages III, will be at Auto Zone Hobbies on Saturday morning to sign copies of his latest book. Berg's Ultimate Garages II will also be available for purchase.
  2. Nite Notes Concert Series: A Celebration of Edgar Hagopian
    When:
    7 p.m. Friday
    Where: Hagopian
    Why go: Hagopian's Nite Notes Concert Series performance Friday will honor the late Edgar Hagopian, noted Detroit philanthropist and music lover. The Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings will play, with refreshments available. Tickets cost $22 in advance ($10 for students) and $27 at the door.
  3. Birmingham Concert Band's 'Pops Concert'
    When:
    3:30 p.m. Sunday
    Where: Lutheran Church of the Redeemer
    Why go: Check out the show-stopping tunes of Warren Barker — famed composer of the music from the 1960s television series Bewitched — during the Birmingham Concert Band's pops concert, "Broadway Showstoppers.' Tickets are free.
  4. Roeper Open House
    When:
    1 p.m. Sunday
    Where: Roeper Middle and Upper School campus
    Why go: Are you thinking of sending your child to the Roeper School? The Upper School campus in Birmingham — where Roeper's middle school and high school-aged students attend — will hold an open house Sunday. Parents and students are encouraged to attend. A presentation, question-and-answer period, tour and sample class will be offered.
  5. Book signing with Mitch Ryder
    When:
    7-9 p.m. Friday
    Where: Lido Gallery
    Why go: Legendary rock 'n' roll icon Mitch Ryder will read excerpts from his new autobiography, Devils & Blue Dresses: My Wild Ride as a Rock and Roll Legend. He'll also sign copies of the book. Plus, stick around for a musical tribute to Ryder from host John D. Lamb and poet M.L. Liebler.
