Fall Opening Planned for Walgreens on Woodward
Walgreens will open in the former Borders location on Woodward Avenue after officially closing on the deal, a real estate development firm announced Monday.
Walgreens will open this fall in the former Borders location in Birmingham, the development company announced on Monday.
"We are thrilled to announced the fact that this deal has come to a successful close," said Chris Brochert, a partner at Lormax Stern Development Co., in a news release.
"It is exactly the kind of opportunity we look for at Lormax Stern," Brochert said. "Not only were we able to help fill a void left by Borders' closure, but this retail development means more jobs for Oakland County and increased investment in southeast Michigan."
Plans for Walgreens received final approval by the Birmingham City Commission on Feb. 13. Walgreens plans to transform the nearly 30,000-square-foot space with an upscale pharmacy on the first floor and Walgreens' regional headquarters housed in a second-floor office space.
Walgreens management first signed a letter of intent for the space with the building's landlord in October. Officials originally came before the Birmingham Planning Board on Dec. 14, looking for final site plan approval and a recommendation for a special land use permit. Planning Board members postponed that decision until their Jan. 4 meeting, when the board unanimously approved the plans.
The building at 34300 Woodward Ave. has been empty for more than six months after Borders closed as part of the chain's bankruptcy and liquidation proceedings in September.

We may not need another pharmacy in Birmingham but this will be a fine addition to the triangle district--especially with the regional headquarters on the upper floor. For an impressive preview, take a quick tour of the new flagship Walgreens at State Street and Randolph when visiting downtown Chicago--sushi anyone!

I will not shop at Wallgreens again. I just got treated like I was imposing on their time one last time. I've been going to CVS more and more because of their cleanliness, better products, and also being treated like they actually want my business. I've kept going to Walgreens because I get my scripts there. But after today, I'm changing my prescriptions to CVS also. Walgreens might want to hire people who don't hate working there.
