Visions for Vacancies: A Former Furniture Store, Sitting Empty
What should happen to this empty space on South Old Woodward Avenue?
This vacant building may be out of the downtown core, but if you pass through Birmingham on Woodward, you may recognize this vacancy on South Old Woodward.
Just south of Hagopian and Don Thomas Sporthaus, this empty building at 820 S. Old Woodward is the former home of the furniture store Belle Maison. The space has 5,150 of square feet and is available for rent for just over $120,000 per year, according to LoopNet.com.
The store faces Old Woodward yet sits across from from the grassy triangle just south of the 555 building, giving it visibility on Woodward as well.
What do you think should move into the space? Is the building primed for office or is there a kind of store you think Birmingham is lacking?
You don't need to be a commercial developer or city planner — or have money to invest in a business project — to have the next great idea. We want to hear about it.

I think it would be a great spot for a craft mall or antique mall. It seems that the Rust Belt in Ferndale is doing well...

What Birmingham really needs is a combination coffee shop, cupcake bakery, Pilates studio, and bistro for DOGS. Of course, it should be required to have outdoor dining and valet parking service but they can't use the word "bar" in the name.

I agree that Birmingham is lacking of bakeries and coffee houses where patrons can just walk past and dropby anytime of the day, unlike a furniture store where you only see customers maybe during year end when their furnishings need replacement or towards a special occasion like Christmas or Thanksgiving perhaps. The shop needs a little joy and customers definitely perk any shops up!
