For four months, Carrie Dunn watched and marvelled at how the vacant space at the north end of Bloomfield Plaza transformed into the latest Trader Joe's store. From dirt floors, exposed ceiling wires and plywood structures to painted drywall, custom artwork and tons of product, as captain, she said she couldn't believe it was time to open the doors Tuesday morning.

But then she saw the line of people a dozen deep outside her doors.

"It became real, and it was amazing because there were people lined up and ready. And that's who all this was for," Dunn said.

Customers snaked their way through spacious aisles, picking up produce, frozen goods and trademark snacks throughout the opening morning. Though it may take shoppers a bit of time to get acclimated to the new surroundings, Dunn said there are more than 50 staff available and ready to guide customers to their favorite products.

The staff, Dunn included, moved over from the Farmington Hills location, which was about 30 percent smaller than the 15,000 square foot new store, she said.

"Lots of friendly faces here this morning," she said while greeting shoppers shortly after opening.

"I'm loving this," gushed Maria of Bloomfield of Township while checking out with a cart full of products Tuesday morning. "It's the same courteous and friendly staff from the Farmington Hills store but much closer to home."

The new store, located at the corner of Telegraph and Maple roads is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

Trader Joe's is a great monthly destination store. From Two Buck Chuck to sushi, they have an interesting and extensive selection. Their products are a good value, and supplement our weekly groceries. Their seasonal coffees are great. They carry Michigan craft brews as well. Now if only Hiller's would locate in the old Kroger's space, Bloomfield Plaza would be complete.
