Springdale Golf Course Opens Friday for the 2013 Season

Anyone, whether they have a membership to Birmingham's golf courses or not, can play and "Beat the Weather" this weekend.

Yesterday we told you that Birmingham's Dairy Mat and Dairy Deluxe were finally open for the season. Now it's time for another sign of spring: Springdale Golf Course opens today.

Plus, don't be deterred by the cold: this weekend only, you'll have a chance to "Beat the Weather" during a special competition March 29-31. Each day, a prize will be giving to those who shoot better than the high temperature.

Also during this time, anyone can show up for a round of golf — whether or not they have a membership. Spring rates (per round) are:

Birmingham's golf courses are entering the 2013 season on a high note. In 2012, Springdale and Lincoln Hills golf courses , a 21 percent jump over the 2011 season.

"We had a phenomenal 2012 season," Department of Public Services Director Lauren Wood told the Birmingham City Commission last week.

The number of rounds played also jumped in 2012, a fact largely attributed last spring's warm weather. This weekend, however, don't expect temperatures to climb much higher than 50. According to the National Weather Service, the high today and Saturday will be 51 degrees. Sunday, the high will be 50 degrees though showers are in the forecast.

New this year at both golf courses is Steven Gura, Birmingham's new PGA teaching professional. A graduate of the professional golf management program at Ferris State University, Gura has been a teacher at various private and public golf facilities.

"As a PGA professional, Steve has an exceptional ability to analyze and assess a player's natural talents," a press release from the golf courses reads. "He then enhances those talents through instructional techniques so as to bring out the very best in each and every student."

Right now, those who renew or purchase their 2013 membership by Tuesday, April 30 will receive a $2 off coupon toward a round of golf. You can purchase or renew your membership at Lincoln Hills, Springdale, the Birmingham Ice Sports Arena and the Department of Public Services.
