What's on the agenda?
New sandwich, barber shop for Woodward?
The group looking to re-develop the former Bordine's on Woodward location comes back to the Birmingham Planning Board Wednesday, and this time, they have plans for a new barber shop and sandwich restaurant.
Last year, developers first came before the city looking to build a Dunkin Donuts at the now-vacant property at 33779 and 33757 Woodward Ave., sandwiched between Humphrey and Bennaville. The site is comprised of a greenhouse structure, a parking lot in the rear, and the brick, Hi-Way Collision building on Humphrey.
Those plans were abandoned last fall and in October, developers received final site plan approval to re-develop the site for retail, though no tenants had yet been identified.
Now, the developer wants to demolish the existing greenhouse and construct a one-story, single-tenant building. The Hi-Way Collision building would be maintained, and according to plans sent to the planning board, a new barber shop is looking to move in.
Meanwhile, the new retail building has one prospective tenant lined up so far, identified only in planning documents as "Mike's Sub Shop."
On Wednesday, developers are looking for an amendment to their original Final Site Plan Review and approval for their Design Review.
If plans for both businesses are ultimately approved, they would have company. Fred's Barber Shop is located just a few blocks to the south on Woodward, just north of Chapin, while Jimmy John's is also a few blocks south, on the east side of Woodward.
Other Planning Board actions:
- Bistro discussion: Board members will continue their discussion about Birmingham's bistro ordinance with the city attorney.
- Study session: During the study session (during which no decisions are made), planning board members will discuss: regulated uses, an update on the South Woodward Gateway Master Plan, and the Community Development Annual Report.
