Hyde Park Steakhouse Fills with Preview Guests Before Thursday Debut
Menu includes Ty Cobb Steak, Steak Harwell and three other tributes to local sports heroes.
Weeks of training gave way to show time Tuesday for the chefs, servers and managers at Birmingham's newest restaurant, Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse. They fed a full house of preview guests on the first of two shakeout test evenings before Thursday's public opening on Old South Woodward.
A four-course partial menu meal included oysters, shrimp, steaks and four seafood selections.
"I think it went very well," Executive Chef Allan Ayer of Novi commented as the 180-seat dining rooms cleared. "I saw some details that still need to be worked out, of course, but they shouldn't be anything patrons noticed."
He and General Manager Daniel Cosenzi stopped by tables to solicit comments several times. The Columbus-based group's two owners stayed in Ohio. "They didn't want to make us nervous," Cosenzi said.
Hyde Park puts local stars figures' name on menus at each of its 11 other steakhouses in four states, a tradition maintained at Michigan's first site. Birmingham diners can order tenderloin, filet mignon and New York Strip named for Ty Cobb, Steve Yzerman, Ernie Harwell, Henrik Zetterberg and Barry Sanders.
Those selections run from about $33 to $41, with other entrees priced at $19 to $27. Connoisseurs interested in "dry-aged reserve prime steaks" will pay $65 to $79 for 18-ounce or 26-ounce cuts.
Hyde Park will serve dinner from 5-10 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, 5-10:30 p.m. Thursday, 5-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 5-8 p.m. Sunday. A "small plates" bar menu, including $13 dry-aged burgeers, is available 4:30-6:30 p.m. and from 9 p.m. until closing.

Nice staff who really seem to try hard. Nevertheless, the food quality was underwhelming. When you consider the number of high end steak houses in Birmingham and surrounding area, there is simply no room for error. Don't think I would go back.

My15th Anniversary Dinner!! Made reservations for 5 p.m. and requested a horse shoe booth. Upon arriving at Hydepark I was welcomed by the host and I quickly learn that my reservation request had been given away.. In the host own words " She had been strong armed " by some other guests.. I then ask to speak to manager I was told by the General manager Daniel Cosenzi the host made an error and he apologize. We settled for a table and proceeded to place our order. Steak was cold and tough!!!!!! Sides was average at best...Something that you wouldn't be expecting at a 5 star restaurant.. Once again I told Daniel about other issue again and once again apologized and told me to please give the restaurant another try and that dinner would be on him.... So I called Mr Daniel Cosenzi 3 weeks later and left a voicemail message and as of today have yet to get a call back. WAITER WAS THE BEST PART OF THE NIGHT.. $180 out the window .......
