Feature Photo: Demolition Begins at Woodward Mobil Station
The Mobil station at 36101 Woodward Ave. is nearly in pieces Monday afternoon as demolition lays way for bigger gas station and Tim Hortons addition.
The "Mobil" sign was hanging crooked in the fall air Monday afternoon as construction workers driving a backhoe worked to take the Mobil gas station at 36101 Woodward Ave. apart piece by piece.
The demolition will prime the space for construction of a bigger gas station at the same location, featuring a Tim Hortons bakery and drive thru.
The gas station was closed early last week and by Friday, a chain link fence surrounded the property at the triangular intersection of Woodward, Old Woodward and Oak Street.
Planning Director Jana Ecker said the station owners don't have plans to expand the footprint of the paved area, protecting the grassy triangle and row of pine trees facing the streets. Assistant building official Ken Cooper said construction is slated to begin almost immediately after demolition ends.
