DIA Downtown: Cranes Take Off in Japanese Artist's Painting
Japanese artist's painting is one of seven works on display in downtown Birmingham this fall.
A digital reproduction of Reeds and Cranes from the 1800s by Japanese artist Suzuki Kiitsu decorates the side of a building at 211 W. Maple Rd. The piece is part of the Detroit Institute of Arts' (DIA) Inside|Out program which takes art reproductions to the streets of suburban Detroit communities.
This is what the DIA had to say about Reeds and Cranes:
The birds' delicately painted white and black plumage is set against a pure gold background. Acure observation is melded to a strong sense of abstract design in this depiction of feeding and flying cranes — themselves a symbol of longevity in Japan.
