Business Briefs: Jewelry Store Co-Owner to be Honored at Chamber of Commerce Event

Here's a snapshot of activity in Birmingham's business community this week:

Astrein to receive Business Person of the Year award

Richard Astrein, co-owner of Astrein's Creative Jewelry, will receive the Birmingham Bloomfield Chamber of Commerce's 2011 Business Person of the Year Award at the chamber's annual meeting at 8 a.m. Dec. 1 at The Community House.

Astrein has been in downtown Birmingham with Astrein's Creative Jewelry for 35 years. According to a blog post on the chamber's website, Astrein is also a founding board member of the Principal Shopping District and regularly gives to various area charities, including Beaumont Children's Hospital, the Alzheimer's Association, Common Ground and the Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition.

"(Astrein) truly loves this community, and has gone light years beyond many of his peers in supporting the community, its residents and its institutions," chamber President Joe Bauman wrote in the blog post.

Powerhouse Gym to host health fair

Powerhouse Gym will host a health fair from 5-8 p.m. Nov. 30. The event, which is open to the public, will include knee and shoulder screens, blood pressure and cholesterol screens, personal training consultations as well as skin analysis from Nu Image Medical Spa.

There will also be samples of healthful food from Cosi & Cacao Tree Cafe and other organic products from B Natural Organics. Lucy will also be hand with a special trunk show.

Organizers hope to make the health fair an annual event.

Drop off Toys for Tots donations at MainStreet Design Build

MainStreet Design Build, a design and build firm, has been designated as a drop-off location for Toys for Tots this holiday season.

Managed by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, Toys for Tots is a program to collect new, unwrapped toys in November and December each year, then distribute those toys as Christmas gifts to needy children in the community in which the campaign is conducted.

"We really enjoy participating as a collection center," said Christine Ramaekers, vice president of MainStreet Design Build, in a press release. "Knowing that we will be helping families in need have a happy holiday is a great way to start the season.

"Our gift givers love to share the reason behind the gifts they have donated," she said. "And we've had several clients drop off and mail us checks. We're trying to make it easy for people to donate to a great cause."

Donations of new, unwrapped toys or financial donations via check may be brought to the to the MainStreet Design Build showroom at 555 Old Woodward Ave., on the garden level. Toys may be dropped off from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday through Dec. 14.

Civil engineering firm moving into new Birmingham offices

Giffels-Webster, a civil engineering and surveying firm, is moving into new office space in downtown Birmingham. The new Giffels-Webster office will be located at 1025 E. Maple Rd.

“We have long-standing valuable clients, such as South Lyon, Commerce Township, Ferndale and Lathrup Village, and our new office location in Birmingham puts us in a more central location to better serve all of our Oakland County clients,” said Loren Crandell, president of Giffels-Webster Engineers and head of the Birmingham office.

“Birmingham is an eminently walker- and biker-friendly city that is home to a thriving, affordable business district, and these are values that we support,” Crandell said.

Giffels-Webster is also expanding at its main office in downtown Detroit.

Cupcake Station offering 'We're Not in Kansas' cupcakes to help 'knock out bullying'

The Cupcake Station is partnering with WMGC-FM Magic 105.1 to help "knock out bullying" by offering "We're Not in Kansas" cupcakes now through Dec. 7. From each cupcake sold, $1 will go to BullyBust, an alliance looking to address bullying in schools nationwide. Each cupcake is made of spice cake, filled with apple filling, frosted with caramel butter cream and topped with Dorothy-red sugar.
