MainStreet Design Build hosts ribbon cutting

Co-owners Steve and Christine Ramaekers celebrated the 20th anniversary of MainStreet Design Build with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week.

Based in downtown Birmingham, MainStreet Design Build is a full-service design and construction firm that has been creating kitchens, additions and bathrooms throughout Metro Detroit since 1991.

"We started out renovating and restoring older and historic homes," Steve Ramaekers said. "When homes in our area were built, master suites and gourmet kitchens did not exist ... We recognize that today, lifestyles have changed. Most of our work is now focused on repurposing existing space or expanding the home's square footage to provide clients with more fuctional spaces with modern amentities."

Cupcake Station goes pink for the cure

The Cupcake Station is creating specially decorated cupcakes to support Breast Cancer Awareness. For the whole month of October, the store will be baking chocolate and vanilla cupcakes frosted with pink or white buttercream icing and topped with a pink Breast Cancer Awareness ribbon.

The Cupcake Station will donate $1 for each Breast Cancer Awareness cupcake sold.

“Breast cancer touches everyone in one way or another. We have friends battling it right now," owner Kerry Johnson said. "This is just one way to show our support. We did the same thing last year and our customers really stepped up.  It felt good to be able to help.”

Birmingham chefs 'Feed the Need' in Pontiac, Detroit

Several Birmingham restaurants and chefs will be giving back Wednesday as they participate in the 52-week Detroit Area Chefs Feed the Need Program.

Every Wednesday for 52 weeks, a different Metro Detroit restaurant or catering company will serve lunch on a rotation schedule at five soup kitchens in Detroit and Pontiac. Through the course of the program, more than 12,000 meals will be served.

Five area organizations will benefit from the rotating Feed the Need program in Michigan: the Cass Community Center and Conner and Meldrum Capuchin Soup Kitchens in Detroit; and the Baldwin Center and Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac.

Participating Birmingham restaurants are Tallulah Wine Bar & Bistro, Big Rock Chop House, Cafe Via, Forest Grill, Phoenicia, Toast and the Townsend Hotel.
