Brother Rice to Open Football Season Against Division 1 Champ Cass Tech

Annual high school kickoff event gets a new name and venue.

DETROIT – In a battle of champions, 2011 Division 2 victor Birmingham Brother Rice will face Division 1 champion Detroit Cass Tech in the headline game of the annual high school football season kickoff event.

But it won't be at Eastern Michigan University's Rynearson Stadium as the Detroit Sports Commission on Tuesday announced plans to move and rebrand the event.

Since 2005, the event had been known as the Big Day Prep Showdown at EMU in Ypsilanti. This year, Wayne State University will host the event, renamed the Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic at Tom Adams Field on Aug. 24-25.

“The Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic will provide an electric, bowl-game like atmosphere for high school football in the city of Detroit,” Dave Beachnau, Detroit Sports Commission executive director and founder of the event, said in a release. “We believe that the setting in Midtown Detroit at Wayne State will create a unique and memorable experience for the players and fans of high school football.”

One thing that will remain the same about the event is its focus on showcasing the state’s top teams and talents.

Last year, Brother Rice and Cass Tech kicked off their seasons at the event. The Warriors beat Detroit Martin Luther King, 28-21, while Cass Tech lost to Farmington Hills Harrison 43-7.

The games that have been announced so far include:

Aug. 24

Dearborn vs. Clinton Township Chippewa Valley, 4:30 p.m.

Southgate Anderson and Woodhaven, 7:30 p.m.

Aug. 25

Detroit Crockett vs. Oak Park, 11 a.m.

Utica Eisenhower vs. Port Huron, 1:30 p.m.

Detroit King vs. Southfield, 4:30 p.m.

Detroit Cass Tech vs. Birmingham Brother Rice, 7:30 p.m.
