Birmingham Welcomes New Ducati Dealership on Woodward
On Monday night, the Birmingham City Commission approved a request to open a Ducati motorcycle dealership next door to Auto Europe on Woodward.
For Ducati, the third time was the charm for opening a luxury motorcycle dealership in Birmingham.
On Monday night, the Birmingham City Commission approved a request from Ducati to open a motorcycle dealership at 33828 Woodward Ave., or the southern half of the building currently occupied by Auto Europe.
This is the third time Ducati has come before the city, the first being in August 2012 when Daniel Cable, a Rochester Hills business owner, received permission to open a dealership at 394 S. Old Woodward.
After that deal fell through, a second group — this time led by Charlie Knoll — requested to open a Ducati dealership at 670 S. Old Woodward, the site of the soon-to-be-closed Azar's Oriental Rugs. Citing a lack of details, city commissioners voted down that proposal in November.
On Monday, Knoll came before the Birmingham City Commission with a third location in mind, the southern half of Auto Europe's building on Woodward, which is now sitting unused.
This time, the plan passed unanimously 6-0, with only City Commissioner Scott Moore absent.
Ducati must come before the City Commission for approval because selling motorcycles is a regulated use in Birmingham, and subject to discussion and a public hearing.
"When we first heart about this, I thought what a great fit our city," said City Commissioner Tom McDaniel. "I think it's a wonderful addition to our city."
Birmingham's Ducati dealership will the third in Michigan, the other two located in Clinton Township and Kalamazoo. Birmingham will be the only Michigan dealership to exclusively sell Ducati motorcycles.
Based in Italy, Ducati sells six different classes of handmade motorcycles, ranging in price from $9,000-$30,000. The dealership will also sell Ducati gear and be staffed by specialized Ducati repair technicians.
The dealership will be open seven days a week, with hours varying based on the season and other special events. Peak season hours will be: 8:30 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday; 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday; 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday.
On Monday night, city commissioners were most concerned with the amount of noise that would come from a dealership selling loud motorcycles. Birmingham ordinance requires that, as part of their daily operations, businesses not exceed a maximum of 80 decibels during the day and 60 decibels at night.
According to Knoll and a Ducati representative, street bikes can only be as loud as 83 decibels when they're running. A dynamometer, equipment used to test motorcycles, would be on site but Knoll assured commissioners they would be building a special, noise-controlled room for the machine to cut down on excess noise.
"Plus, the noise generated by that would be completely subdued by Woodward traffic," Knoll said. Planning Director Jana Ecker said traffic on Woodward nearly always exceeds 80 decibels.
In general, Knoll said he's willing to do whatever he can to please his new neighbors and please the city to make Ducati work for Birmingham.
"We want to be a success there, and aggrevating the residents would not be good for us," he said.
Upon opening their doors, Ducati will join a string of car dealerships along the east side of Woodward north of Lincoln, including Auto Europe, Fred Lavery's Porsche, Audi and Range Rover dealership, and the recently-opened Golling Fiat.

No one buys a stock motorcycle and rides it slowly around town. When you give someone a bike that goes 200mph, they are going to use that power and want to make it go faster and sound louder. A ducati is a RACE BIKE, what do racers want.... faster faster faster, and louder louder louder. Another note, the Dyno requires running the bike at redline rpm which would put the decibal level at double the maximum level. I am not against bikes, but I am against the way Ducati is lying to get this store approved... it clearly violates all noise regulations of the city of Birmingham.

Hey, Betty, Dyno rooms are desigend and built with exceptional sound abatement technology soley for the purpose of meeting strict regulations. And, can you share with us the scientific calculations you used to determine that running a Ducati at redline produces over 160 DB's?

It is unclear to me why this is such a "wonderful addition to our our city" as our City Commissioner attests; other than a new tax paying business. Any minimal amount of effort reveals that this is primarily a racing bike, designed to go very very fast. As is is an expensive Italian toy the market is the rich guy with lots of disposable income. As already noted above they are noisy and dangerous when ridden fast. BMW or even Indian would have been a better fit as they are both cruisers and city bikes in their primary guise. Don't expect this to go well or for that matter last long.

Ah, good old crusty and curmudgeony B'ham. Some highly intelligent commentary here I see. Dyno rooms can be soundproofed to have almost no noticeable noise outside the room so that is a moot point. As for BMW, really? It's clear you don't have any idea about their model line which includes "noisy and dangerous when ridden fast bikes" namely, the S1000RR. As for your typical cruiser bikes, they tend to be some of the worst noise polluters when coupled with the obligatory "straight" pipes.
Dennis T, can you elaborate on what you don't expect to go well or last long? Ducati is one top brands in the industry and have been successful in a tough economic climate, unlike many other manufacturers. They attract a higher end clientele than almost any other brand so rather than be scared of "those motorcycle people", perhaps you should applaud the addition of a high end business and culture to your rather stale community.

Dear F1D. By 'higher end clientele' do you mean those that can easily afford these 'boy toys? Tell me, where does the 'culture' come in?

I'm a Ducati owner, along with several other bikes, so I welcome the dealership to Bham. Much closer for me. I'm a sane and sensible rider and I don't think Bham residents have anything to worry about.

As a law abiding Ducati owner, who frequently rides through Birmingham and patronizes Birmingham businesses, I am appalled at the unfounded paranoia surrounding this issue. Where was the public debate and outcry when four tobacco dealers opened in Birmingham mere blocks away from the location of this proposed motorcycle store? Guaranteed the Dream Cruise creates more noise pollution than this store will. (For those people who are going to argue the Dream Cruise is only "one weekend per year", I say remember people can only ride motorcycles four to six months out of every year due to the weather.)
I am embarrassed to be neighbors with such ignorant people.

I have no problems with a Ducati dealership coming to Birmingham. I am also not thrilled about the tobacco dealers that have moved in. In fact, I just worked on a project where we purposely did NOT ask any of them for a donation due to the business they conduct. However, the Dream Cruise is another huge issue for me. It seems when spring breaks, here come the cruisers. The Dream Cruise is supposed to be one day a year and it turns into the ENTIRE summer and well into the fall. This needs to stop. The cruisers tie up the streets at times when parents like me are trying to get our kids to their various commitments on and around Woodward. It is truly getting ridiculous!

I'm also a Ducati rider. I regularly ride through Birmingham and the Woodward strip. I'm not any louder than the classic cars going by. I'm MUCH quieter than the Harleys on the road. I'm looking forward to a place closer than Clinton Township or Kalamazoo for Ducati sales and service.
