The kings from Birmingham Unified hockey are looking to give back this month, with both the varsity and junior varsity teams hosting a charity tournament to benefit Common Ground at the end of the month.
On Jan. 26, the Birmingham Unified hockey teams — made up of high school players from Seaholm and Groves high schools — will host the tournament at the Birmingham Ice Sports Arena, located at the far end of East Lincoln Road.
All proceeds from the games will be donated to Common Ground, a nonprofit agency dedicated to helping youths, adults and families in crisis. The nonprofit regularly serve more than 50,000 at-risk residents from Oakland and Genessee counties every year.
The junior varsity game will begin at 7 p.m. against Clarkston, immediately followed by the varsity game against Oxford.
To get into the game, attendees will need to be wearing a special t-shirt, with proceeds from shirt sales also going to Common Ground. Hockey players will be taking pre-orders through Friday, though shirts will be sold at the game as well. Shirts are $10 each.
