Birmingham Celebrates Like It's 1933 to Raise Money for Museum

There will be live jazz, drinks from the 1920's, period attire and a chance to "celebrate" the repeal of prohibition at this fundraiser for the Birmingham Historical Museum.

Prohibition is over! Let's celebrate!

Well, the prohibition of alcohol sales was officially repealed in the United States in 1933 with the 21st amendment, but next week, Birmingham will be celebrating like it's 1933 with Birmingham, Underground: A Speakeasy Event Celebrating the Repeal of Prohibition.

The event, happening at 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, is hosted by the Friends of the Birmingham Historical Museum and Park, with all proceeds benefitting the local museum.

In a nod to the museum's recent series of exhibits on Birmingham in the 1920's and 1930's, Edison's will be transformed next week into a 1930's-style speakeasy, complete with period costumes, live jazz and more.

What can party-goers expect at this special event? Edison's will play host to live jazz music circa 1920's and 1930's, while partiers will enjoy hearty hors d'oeuvres and beverages of the era. Throughout the evening, partiers can also participate in select games of chance. Period attire is, of course, encouraged.

Tickets to the event are $100 each and since space is limited, pre-registration and pre-payment is required. Call the museum at 248-530-1928 to reserve your tickets. But make sure you call ahead: you can't get into this speakeasy without the password.

The deadline to register for Birmingham, Underground: A Speakeasy Event Celebrating the Repeal of Prohibition is 4 p.m. Saturday.

While you're in the way-back-when mood, make sure to head over to the Birmingham Historical Museum to check out this year's holiday model train exhibit, which celebrates Birmingham in the "roaring twenties," as well as a vintage toy exhibit.
