Are there any disc golf fans in the house?

Beverly Park, located off Beverly Road north of 13 Mile Road in Beverly Hills, will be celebrating the grand opening of a new nine-hole disc golf course at 10 a.m. Friday morning.

As part of the grand opening ceremony, Play It Again Sports — which has 10 locations around Metro Detroit, including one on 14 Mile in Clawson — will be offering a free disc golf clinic featuring tips and game strategies from the course's designer, John Minicuci.

"This is a great opportunity for disc golfers, beginniners and advanced players alike, to improve their game and to meet fellow disc golfers," Minicuci said.

Minicuci, a local disc golf professional and enthusiast, runs www.MotorCityChainGang.com, the website for a local league and hub for the local disc golf scene. Minicuci writes that the local disc golf scene took off in 1981 when locals started meeting regularly to play at Troy's Raintree Park and Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township.

Minicuci said the first 20 people to register for the clinic will also receive a free Discraft disc.

Currently, the closest disc golf courses are located in Troy, at Firefighters Park and Raintree Park, and in Royal Oak, at Starr-Jaycee Park and Wagner Park.
