Best Thing We Ate This Week: Finding the Best Sandwich
Panera in downtown Birmingham has a roast beef that hit the spot.
Sometimes you need a quick lunch during the work week, and what's quicker than a sandwich and some chips? Now I know there's nothing more generic than a working lunch at Panera — step into any and you're likely to find dozens of freelance writers working on three-hour ice teas — but Panera truly came through this week, and for that, I say thank you.
My lunch in Birmingham this week involved Panera's roast beef sandwich. It's made of roast beef, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a delicious cheesy bread. I'm not a fan of mayo but it hit the spot right when I needed it. The other hit was Panera's lunch hour, meaning the wait was longer than I would have preferred.
There are plenty of places to find a good sandwich during the work week, so tell me your favorite. I give bonus points to places where I can plug in my laptop and get some work done while I'm eating. What kind of atmosphere do you prefer? An elegant locale where you can bring your clients? The deli where you grab a BLT and run? Or something in-between?

Papa Joe's has an array of well-stacked sandwiches -- prepared or custom-made, on bread, ciabatta or baguette -- to enjoy at inside or patio cafe tables.
And yes: Wi-fi access for those Patch-never-rests lunchtimes.
The only ding: South end of town and across Big Woodward. But we live in a Walkable City, right?
