5 Things To Know This Week: Tree Lighting Ceremony, Gleaners Food Drive

What you need to know about what's going on in Birmingham this week.

  1. Tree lighting ceremony Wednesday: The holidays officially come to Birmingham Wednesday with the lighting of the official city Christmas tree at 6 p.m. in Shain Park. Also that evening, Birmingham's Santa House opens for the season and the city begins offering holiday carriage rides.
  2. Thanksgiving Thursday: City offices, the library and various hotspots around town will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday, while grocery stores will be changing up their hours to accomodate last-minute shoppers. Stay tuned to Patch for a complete list of closures and new hours.
  3. No school starting Wednesday: The Thanksgiving holiday starts early for Birmingham's students. Students from Birmingham Public Schools, as well as the city's various private schools, will be on break Wednesday through Friday. Classes begin again Monday.
  4. Start planning your holiday shopping: Do you like getting a jump on your holiday shopping? Black Friday happens this week and nearby Kohl's, Macy's, Targets and Best Buys are opening at midnight Friday. If you prefer to keep things local, stop by downtown Birmingham this weekend to celebrate Small Business Saturday.
  5. Food drive for Gleaners: Have some extra canned foot in your pantry? Meadowbrook Urgent Care will be accepting food donations all week long for the Gleaners Food Bank. The Urgent Care center is open 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located at 33722 Woodward Ave.
