5 Things to Do This Memorial Day

From a ceremony in Shain Park to a parade in Beverly Hills, there's plenty to do Monday to kick off the unofficial start of summer.

Will you be in town this Memorial Day? Are you still looking for something to do with the family or friends? You need not worry: Birmingham has plenty of events lined up for the holiday weekend. Here are the top five:

1. Memorial Day ceremony in Shain Park

A time to honor and remember those who died in service of our country, the Birmingham in will include a military flyover, an address by Mayor Gordon Rinschler, a rifle salute and an appearance by the color guard. The Birmingham Straw Hat band will also perform. The ceremony kicks off at 10 a.m. Monday.

2. Memorial Day Open House at the museum

Help the celebrate its 10-year anniversary by stopping by the museum after the Shain Park Memorial Day ceremony. Refreshments will be served for all guests.

3. Celebrate Memorial Day with a staycation at the Townsend Hotel

Are the children going out of town, but you’re stuck at home? Pretend like you’re somewhere else with special deals at the . Enjoy a meal at the or take a trip to Margot’s European Spa. Cap it all off with a red, white and blue-themed cake from the , and the unofficial beginning of summer never seemed sweeter.

4. Beverly Park Memorial Day parade and carnival

It may be next door in Beverly Hills, but Birmingham residents are welcome to enjoy the . The parade begins at 11 a.m. at and continues down Beverly Road to Beverly Park. There, Beverly Hills will host a carnival for the children, including a flag ceremomy, until 3 p.m.

5. Memorial Day parades nearby

Need even more marching bands, floats and candy? Birmingham’s neighbors are having plenty of parades of their own Monday. The begins at 9 a.m. and travels from South Main Street to Harrison to Second Street, ending at the Veterans Memorial. Ferndale will hosting its , which begins at 10 a.m. at Livernois and West Breckenridge.
