Country Day drew one of the top teams in Division 1 for their opener at the MIHL Hockey Showcase Thursday night at the Kennedy Recreation Center in Trenton. The Yellowjackets battled Plymouth, yielding up a one-goal lead into the third period before eventually falling 4-0.
Plymouth is 16-3-1 and ranked sixth in Division 1.
The two teams were scoreless after the first period. The only goal of the second period was scored with a little over four minutes left. Josh Smith got the goal with an assist from Charlie Supernois.
The Wildcats went up 2-0 three minutes into the final period when Mike Schultz scored from Smith. Plymouth picked up an insurance goal at 5:58. Nick Schultz got the puck behind the Country Day net and found Zach Taverne all alone out front. Smith capped the scoring with seven seconds left in the game, when he put in a rebound after a shot by Nick Schultz.
Country Day goalie Chris Cantrell played a strong game and made 25 saves in the loss.
Country Day's record is now 14-5-2.
