Local Teen Wins Gold at Health Occupations Competition
Steven Schmatz, 15 — a Birmingham resident and sophomore at the International Academy in Bloomfield Hills — won big at last month's 2012 Michigan Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) annual competition.
Held April 19-20 at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa, Schmatz won the gold medal in pathophysiology. The conference was attended by almost 2,000 attendees from Michigan.
Schmatz, the son of Craig and Mona Schmatz, now moves on to the HOSA national competition on June 20-23 in Orlando, FL.
