Country Day Chalks Up 13th Win, 7-1 Over St. Clair

Country Day defeated St. Clair 7-1 Friday night at the Southfield Sports Arena to improve their record to 13-2-2.

"It's exam week," said Detroit Country Day coach Frank Novock. "It's tough. We've been off four days and we only had one chance to practice so the team was a little sluggish at the start, a little sloppy."

Country Day started the scoring in the first period period when Matt Hobbs skated around the St. Clair defense, then beat goalie John Estapa with a backhand.  A minute later, Toby Murray took the puck along the right boards deep into the St. Clair end and rifled a shot into the net to make it 2-0 for the Yellowjackets.  Jake Hartje and Zach Bensinger picked up assists on the play. St. Clair narrowed the margin to 2-1 when Mitch Moore scored from Shane Meyers to close out scoring in the period.

In the second period, Country Day added four goals. A little more than a minute into the period, Country Day worked the power play.  Hunter Kosnik fed the puck to Zach Bensinger at the right circle.  Bensinger put the puck in front of the net and Jack Bergmann converted. Bensinger and Sebastian Stankiewicz picked up assists.

At 3:26 of the period, Stankiewicz picked up a puck at his own blue line, went through the St. Clair defense and scored on a backhand to make it 4-1.  Jake Hartje and Nick Martin got the assists. Three minutes later, Max VanAntwerp blasted a rebound past Estapa  after being set up by Austin Hickner and James Roberts.  As time wound down in the period, Toby Murray scored his second of the night from Roberts and Spencer Johnson to increase the Yellowjacket lead to 6-1 after two periods of play.

"In the second period, we got better doing the little things, getting pucks in, moving our feet better, finishing checks, getting shots on goal, and we got a few in the net," said Coach Novock.

Freshman defenseman Matt Dolan scored the only goal of the third period.  Dolan scooped up a rebound that came out in front, and whistled it past Estapa.  Matt Hobbs and Jack Bergmann got assists.

Country Day senior goalie Nathan Grathwohl made 17 saves in the win.

"We had contributions from alot of guys throughout the night," said Novock.  " As we near the end of the year, we want to continue to do the little things."

"This was a great way to send the seniors out on Senior Night.  Hopefully, we can add a little better game, a little cleaner, a little crisper, a little sharper game all around against Royal Oak tomorrow night."
