Birmingham Jewelry Designer Revs Up Fashion Models at Detroit Auto Show
Beth North’s necklaces, bracelets and earrings set to appear at 78 auto shows throughout the nation, including Chicago, Philadelphia and New York
Birmingham, Michigan (January 16, 2013) – Beth North, who has been hand-making modern and eclectics ilver and stone jewelry for 16 years, was thrilled when she was contacted by Shari Barnett, the director of creative services for Productions Plus, a talent agency for auto and trade shows, with a very special project: to design and produce jewelry to be worn by models promoting cars around the country at this year’s auto shows.
At the end of November and in early December 2012, North’s necklaces, bracelets and earrings were seen by visitors to the General Motors, Lexus and Scion exhibitions at the LA Auto Show. The beautiful jewelry was a huge hit, and when the North American Auto Show opens to the public in Detroit on Saturday (January 19, 2013), Beth North Designs, made at North’s studio in Birmingham, will again be seen on the models at exhibits for General Motors, including Chevy, Cadillac and GMC, plus Lexus
and Scion.
Most designs are made in sterling silver, which North oxidizes and completes with a satin finish. The stones she uses – such as amethyst and pearls – are all real. As the jewelry is hand-made, each piece is original and often contains inspirational words. Moreover, her pieces are all affordable, with prices ranging from $30 to $500.
Eagle-eyed visitors to the Chevy exhibit will see female models wearing large acrylic bracelets with customized and specially designed verbage; male models will wear thinner acrylic bracelets.
“This is a huge honor for me to have my work seen by such a large audience and at an event as prestigious as the North American Auto Show,” said North, 44, who is married to John and has two young daughters Mia, 10, and six-year-old Stella. “I’ve been hearing that the models love the jewelry; it makes me really happy that they are enjoying wearing it so much!”
North, who lives in Birmingham, has been selling her jewelry locally in Michigan at a number of stores and galleries, including the Birmingham Bloomfield Arts Center in Birmingham, Yellow Door in Berkley and Voila Boutique in Grosse Pointe Farms and The Artisan’s Bench in Brighton, as well as on line at her website (www.bethnorthdesigns.com). Further afield, she is one of the designers featured at Giving Tree Jewelry in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. During August 2011, while exhibiting at the
New York International Gift Fair, North was awarded the Best New Jewelry Award and her pieces were picked up by 12 stores around the country.
North, who is self-taught and whose first love in the art world was pottery, says that working with metal is always a fluid experience. “Every single design is exactly like its wearer, a beautiful unique individual,” she explains. “In one of my series of jewelry I stamp the word “be” followed by whatever that wearer would like to be – it inspires people with possibility and also acts as reminder that amongst all the choices we have, there is one “be” we should never forget, and that’s the importance of being yourself.”
With her designs now set for a major national audience in 2013, North has another reason to celebrate: she just received the Fashion Group International Award for Fine Jewelry and will be highlighted in the February 2013 issue of Styleline Magazine.
